true that the Chinese lave constructed some vighty miles of

the railway at the Canton end and that in their own interests

a conection should be effected as soon as possible. As this

Kuangtung section is, however, outside the ilukuang Railway

project, we have not a very strong position in urging such en

arwent at present, but as soon as tr. isayars returns to

Peking, I shall consult him and do what is possible to meet

the just requirements of lionskon; in this matter.

In the meantime, I a calling for a report from his

'ajesty's Consul-General at ton on the subject.
